Of course Kerry responded to the smears. But he refused to deal with them after the initial response, knowing it was just a dirty trick. Again, in retrospect he should have done different, but those were very busy, very exhausted, very chaotic times. Kerry campaigned for about 200 days after cancer surgery. He raised 150 million dollars. He beats Bush in all three debates. Except for Ohio, he won the election. And maybe he even won Ohio. We just may never know.
