Kerry was talking about real issues then and refused to get down in the mud with the pigs. I advised his #3 guy to hold a press conference kangaroo court and offer to prove any smearvet charge wrong, but the realization was that this would give the smearvets a solid week on TV slinging murder, rape, drug-running, treason, terrorism, any crime they could imagine, and force Kerry to deny the outrageous lies.
This is why smear campaigns work, and the more outraageous the lies the better, especially if you lie and claim your campaign has nothing to do with it. The smearvets was a Karl Rove special. No doubt. Paid for throgh Delay's group. He had done the same thing against McCain in 2000 on a smaller scale.
