Yes, Kerry made the speech about the smearvets, saying "they had nothing to do with the truth". Then he went back to talking about jobs, health care and many other big issues that Rove wanted toi distract the country from.

In past races, Kerry's boatmates were always assigned the job of standing up to the rightwing smear jockeys. They always succeeded. But this time the national media was tricked into giving the smearvets free TV time. Along with the 50 million in dishonest Bush negative ads that had just enough of an effect. By the time the smearvets lies were proven to be rubbish, damage was done.

But if Kerry had stopped his campaign to personally take on John O'Neill, he would have made things even worse.
