Socialism can be a very good thing. Johnny Cash grew up on a socialist commune farm and loved it. Socialism saved the US after the Great Depression and WWII. Our most successful government programs are socialist, Social Security and Medicare. In Canada and Europe, socialist governments have been very successful for the most part.

So don't use the word "socialism" as if it's an evil. The opposite of socialism can be much worse. In fact, all it means is that for the public good certain things are run for the people by the people, as opposed to by the few for the few. And this land is OUR land, not theirs.

Of course the US is never going to be very socialist, nor do I support it becoming much more socialist. But we do need more public health care and sometimes the government can run things a lot better, more honestly and more fairly than private enterprise can.

Like when it comes to energy for instance. We should have a real debate now about why we need to re-regulate the energy business and make sure that whatever the people need, we get. We have been subsidizing those selfish greedy bastards for too long, and they have been taking us to the cleaners lately. They have also been fighting us on environmental issues and getting us to fight wars for them. No more.

Three areas where we need more regulation and "socialism" are health care, energy and defense contracting. Those are the big three gougers and exploiters of the Bush-Cheney era. Together they may cost us a trillion dollars during Bush's terms.
