NOTE: This assumes you use a cable box provided by your cable Co & both your TV & VCR are cable ready....

If it doesn't affect reception, get a A/B switchable splitter & a regular two way splitter (Radio Shack is a good place to buy them). You may also need to buy a couple of short 75 ohm Coaxial cables - 3 to 5 foot lengths should suffice.

That way you can split the cable line into your house before it hits your cable box.

Run one line after the split into the In line on the cable box.

Run the line out of the A/B switchable splitter to your In line on the VCR.

Run the 2nd raw cable line into the B side.

Then attach the line from the Cable Out of the cable box to the A side.

When you want to watch just one show without recording anything leave the switcher on the A side.

When you want to record one show & watch a second simultaneously, switch to the B side & set your VCR to record the channel you want to record & watch your cable ready TV on the other channel (you will need to activate a TV/VCR button on your VCR to allow raw cable to run to your TV set).

Of course this precludes your ability to do this when one of the shows is a premium or scrambled channel that requires your cable box.

Hope this helps.
