Rand worked in Hollywood as a screenwriter and was also a novelist. Many writers change their names -- or if they came from Europe back then they anglicized their name. There is no mystery there. I myself use a pen name for the financial articles and short stories I have written. :)

You are correct that Ayn Rand loathed businessmen who got special favors from the government. She called it the "aristocracy of pull." In her novel, Atlas Shrugged, she drew a strong line between capitalists who struggled to achieve on their own and those who succeed through government favors or legislation.

She would have condemned Halliburton and Enron. She would not have condemned Exxon, because other than lobbyists and campaign contributions (which all corporations have and make today to protect themselves -- look at what happened to Bill Gates when he refused to play the Washington game) they have not used government "pull" to grow their company. In fact, they have fought the government.

Her views have everything to do with the political and philosophical crisis we Americans face today: from the illegal alien invasion to massive governmental intrusion at all levels of our lives.
