American oil companies make a buck a gallon now. It's called gouging. You're living in the far past when maybe they were behaving themselves. No more. Haven't been behaving themnselves since june 2000 when two of their own were nominated for president. How do they do it?

- Deliberately hiding or slowing down supply, creating artificial shortages
- Not building refineries and keeping existing ones going at less than capacity, then blaming politicians
- Colluding with OPEC to jack prices up or keep them high
- Merging to eliminate competition, becoming a monopoly, which is illegal.
- Buying politicians like Bush-Cheney-Delay-Barton and promoting them to leadership positions.
- Knowing Bush-Cheney and the GOP congress won't do a thing so it's a carte blanche to steal.
- Blaming it on China and India, or environmental standards.
- Supporting wars in the Middle East.

By creating this artificial shortage and owning the politicians in DC, they can not only make record windfall profits, but can also lobby to get the public to do something stupid like do away with environmental standards or eliminate the gas tax. That way, big oil has in effect stolen the gas tax for themselves, which is money the government desperately needs to build the infrastructure called the national highway system, and a lot more.
