Kerry assigned Max Cleland and hyis boatmates to handle the Rove smear campaign after his initkal statement.

Get a clue. Smear campaigns are not the fault of the target.
And Rove is an expert at them. Why do deniable smear campaigns work, and why is there no real defense against them? Because if you get the candidate off message denying imaginary crimes, you win. And if the opponent doesn't respond you also win. So you win either way. That's how they took out McCain in South Carolina too, remember.

But when your rightwing media operators get the press to cover the smearers as if they're legit, then you double win.
That was the real crime in 2004, the way the press fell for it, though now they're all kicking themselves.

I did email Kerry's #3 guy with the suiggestion to hold a press conference and offer to answer any and all questions about his war record, but they refused. The reason was it would have put the smearvets on the level with Kerry, legitimizing them. It also would have made Kerry look guilty no matter how much he denied and offered proof. Plus as Tommy Franks said, combat events 40 years old are almost impossible to prove. It also would have forced Kerry to cancel 5-10 appearances talking about real important issues.

Smear campaigns like this need to be outed by the press and dismissed by the voters. Or we must find a way to make them illegal. Truth in advertising. Not a single one of those smearvets "served with John Kerry" except in the broad sense being in the war theater of war. So their very first ad was a big total lie and so was every one after that. If you're a manufacturer and you try that you get busted.
