That would also have played into the smearvets hands too. it would have elevated some smalltime mealy-mouthed liar like John O'Neill to Kerry's level, and made for a huge news story which the mainstream press would have no choice but to cover.

I agree Kerry didn't respond the right way, but what was the right way? Max Cleland the Kerry's boat crew worked full time for months battling those liars. You can't say they were unopposed. That included the Green Beret Kerry fished out of the water saving his life. That guy, who was 100% credible, the smearvets called a liar. Kerry's crew won the debates but the whole thing left just enough doubt.

Difficult to debate someone with zero ethics willing to lie about anything. It was a first in US politics to be against someone with no conscience about lying whatsoever. Hopefully we will soon find rock solid proof the whole thing was organized by Rove and paid for by Delay's slush fund.
