Dear Doug: You missed the critical word in the quote: More than 20 percent improvement in transistor switching speed OR more than a five-fold reduction in transistor current leakage. This will benefit battery life for mobile devices, making it possible to build smaller chips, and therefore smaller, more-powerful products. If you check on AMD's quote for the 42% SiGe transistor speed increase, you will find an even greater (10 fold) reduction in leakage current when kept at the same speeds. The transistor speed leakage scatter graphs showed leakage drops rapidly with small speed decreases. Intel's 45nm process doesn't get both at the same time. Either 20% more clock or 20% of the leakage at same clock. It could be worse and still fit. If it was both at the same time, they would have used and! Pete
