not sure about class not being part of politics. Catholics in boston need not apply, i believe chicago was somewhat the same. they grew in power by taking jobs in fire departments , police departments and other civil service jobs. began with their own city council men, or selectmen. I never even heard of a republican when i was growing up. in a city of about 100,000 there may have been one or two on a ballot, all the fights were really the primaries between another democrat.

The representative was from your neighborhood, city counsel, even when they became state representatives or one speaker of the house. you always saw and talked with him at the coffee cup each morning or evening. Today i do not see anything different there. Class hasn't changed much maybe from lower middle income to middle income or upper middle income but my friends and relatives are still strong democrats. We were born that way , brought up that way, and most remain that way for life, horrors even thinking of changing to another party you would be an outcast..
