"Some in this country argue that the solution is to deport every illegal immigrant -- and that any proposal short of this amounts to amnesty," Bush said. "I disagree. It is neither wise nor realistic to round up millions of people, many with deep roots in the United States, and send them across the border."

"If the president thinks by taking one step forward with enforcement the House will follow him two steps backward with amnesty, he's confusing us with the Senate," said Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., who has called for complete militarization of the border.

"Conservatives are tuning the president out," activist Richard Viguerie said in a statement. "Until we can put a stop to the unrestricted flow of illegal immigrants into our country, amnesty is a nonstarter for conservatives."
