"I am afraid that the best men and women for the job would have to be dragged kicking and screaming to serve two or six years. But hell, we can force 'em. . . after all, it's a free country! :)"

Perhaps there is something about the system that needs to be tweeked. The best (by our estimation) would not be like the current, who see public office as an avenue to something more than performing a service as a representative... Have we over sold the fame and fortune aspect of this role? This to me offers much too clearly alterior motive to the chosen ones.

What incentives would bring the 'best', those noble human beings who are deserving of our reverence? On the other hand one must ask, why ruin a decent human being by forcing them into public office?

Ahh well. Here is the premise I have: The preening peacocks and peahens on stage for our selection should be dismissed outright without further consideration. We the people should seek out the best of the best in all walks of life. Educated, astute, affluent, but most importantly decent human beings who know where the center of the universe is. We should then put all our resources behind (not in front of) such individuals, to move mountains if need be.
