If you define left of center as anyone to the left of an avowedly conservative administration and its even more conservative rightwing critics, then the American center "has moved left", but only relative to a shrinking core of Bush supporters.

If the majority of American opinion on most political issues is now "left" then you have kicked the center about 15-20% to the right of 50-50.

Meiers was shot down because she wasn't conservative enough, that was very clear. It wasn't middle America crying out to sink her, it was the party faithful.

Immigration is an issue where Bush does have majority support among the public. He just can't get his own party to accept such a radical "left of center" position.

But if Bush represents the real political center, he somehow forgot to build a lasting majority to support his economic and foreign policies. Maybe those are just side issues when viewed from what some consider the "real center".

I am far from convinced. What I see is a shrinking support base trying to accuse anyone against them of "not being in the mainstream". That tack doesn't work any longer.

Just ask middle America if they think the current conservative administration shares their values and wants to take the country in a direction they like.

The numbers are out there in black and white.
