Yes, every single person who was not a Soviet spy. And I don't think McCarthy ever caught a real Soviet spy. Granted, there were a few, but that was the FBI and CIA's job. McCarthy was basically persecuting the entire cross-section of innocent Americans who were liberals, internationalists, peace-activists, free spirits and/or supported unions and worker's rights. He concentrated on artists especially. He hated artists. Thought they were all traitors for freely expressing themselves, even some of our greatest artists like Aaron Copeland and Pete Seeger.
Remember, before the Soviets perverted communism into a military dictatorship, it was just an benevolent Christian idealic idea after the Great Depression to share and share alike, just to be able to survive, and to free the middleclass from the yoke of the big robber baron class.
In its ideal sense, there is nothing wrong with communism whatsoever. But in practice, it never worked. It always turned into another form of tyranny and defeated itself. So in the 1930's-1940's, communism was actually a positive idea. But by the 1950's it had turned into something negative. McCarthy persecuted everyone who believed in the 30's-40's ideal, and that was not only wrong but just plain evil.
In effect, all tyrannies are equal and just as bad as each other, whether they are rightwing or leftwing. They are the same. And McCarthy wanted rightwing tyranny in the US. |
