I can't figure out what your complaint is on this topic or what you think my opposition is, sorry. You seem to be tieing it in with the idea of 'self evidence'. Not the idea of self-evident. The quote within the Declaration of Independence by TJ. It was a beautiful piece of propaganda. Look at the very lead paragraph: When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. Fantastic. it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another Does that set the stage or what? No substance whatever. A flat out statement of intent that is "necessary". Manipulative language at it's best. He continues the setup invoking Laws of Nature and Nature's God [he avoided using the Christian God.]. You're entitled to decent respect...who could possibly argue with that? It's like the commercial on the tele where the sign says "clap if you deserve respect". Regarding the Revolutionary period of time and the contradictions and conflicts of that period .... hmmm, my comment has to be taken from 'A Tale of Two Cities', "It was the best of times and the worst of times,"... much like our current circumstance. Since you're not offering the "Intolerable" part of the Quebec Act, I'll tell you what the spin was of the time. Unfortunately, I don't remember where I read this so I can't give you a source. Quebec had nothing to do with the colonies. What they did was claim a slippery slope argument. England was planning on forcing everyone to convert to Catholicism. And the Quebec Act was phase I of the plan. The King of England, the head of the Church of England was goind to force everyone in the colonies to become Roman Catholics. And they bought it! jttmab
