The word "communism" changed from a generally positive idea into a definition of a dastardly disctatorship when the Soviet Union and other countries betrayed its principles. Now we know communism doesn't work, but benevolent honest socialism certainly works, all over the world. In fact all countries are more or less socialist including ours.

After the Great Depression "communism" simply meant "let's all get together and help each other survive with the government's help", and that was badly needed by millions of people. Johnny Cash grew up on a communal farm and it worked great for everyone. They all shared and helped each other out. Very positive. very Christian. very American. Ironic but true.

Communism became a shameful term when military dictatorships we formed under the communist umbrella and when the Cold War ensued. That's when the American rightwing especially used the word "communism" as a dishonest political bludgeon to attack anyone who questioned their Cold War values, which were often very extreme, paranoid and repressive. That was a low point for our American democracy. In fact we became almost as bad as our enemies. McCarthyism was a big lie. It was a very shameful thing.
