If we cease to have a free press (that is, if they are bugged by the executive branch), if free speech is crushed by the bugging of citizens' telephones and emails, and if congress fails to perform its duty of oversight, then we are on the slippery slope toward rightwing totalitarianism which is both un-American, dishonest and self-defeating. It might even mean the end of America as a positive force on the planet. DOn't think it can't happen to some degree. Back during McCarthy's era we came close. Until the people woke up and drove those demonic rightwing persecutors out.
