i believe when congress is being informed of various checks it is not secret. if congress felt the actions were a threat to civil freedom they have the authority to take action. Why haven't any of them done it?

Whoa. There's a serious dissertation there. It's called who has the votes, right? Gotta support our guy.

But on a more serious note, I think the us/them mentality that Bush et al successfully foisted on the country after 9/11 led the congress over the cliff. Led, of course, by the Reps. Passed a seriously flawed Patriots Act by some godawful numbers. Etc.

Some of that is being walked back in the sense that second thoughts are finally arriving.

But I'm convinced we are going to find out some genuinely bad stuff before this is over. I mean when the books are written from folk who were there.

For instance, it would be important to hear first hand accounts of the debates between the NSA lawyers and Cheney when he kept arguing for the necessity of warrantless invasions of privacy and the NSA lawyers kept arguing it was illegal. And the conversations with the phone company lawyers. And this is all just one small slice.

Bad stuff.

As for whether the leaks damaged security, we don't know and can't know until someone tells us what's being done. And the administration just lost its credibility pass. Big time, as someone said.
