None of the recent controversies about Bush's surveillance programs involved surveillance of the press. Even if they did it would still be a free press. The issue is privacy not freedom.

Back during McCarthy's era we came close.

I'm not fan of McCarthy but we did not come close to totalitarianism at that time or since.
