dougSF30, on early announce of K8L

My opinion is that they would not have got lost in it, they would've been a part of each story, if they'd also been talking about their next generation at IDF time. And, being a 2007 part, they would've had far fewer worries about any Osbourne impact. Anyhow, water under the bridge now.

No, you're looking at this the wrong way. Earlier announcement of K8L would have Osborned AMDs socket 939 production. Why buy a socket 939 when a socket AM2 system might be upgradable to K8L in two (or fewer) years? In fact, I've been thinking about getting a laptop and a new desktop over the past half year -- if AMD's share price were higher, maybe thinking harder about it. But with AM2 and Turion X2 coming out now, there was lots of reason for an informed buyer to wait. So, in fact, AMD has been Osborning themselves, just not as badly as if they had announced K8L.

Now, though, is the right time to announce it, because I'll buy a new system expecting to be able to upgrade, even though I probably never will. Also, don't be surprised if there's a little more improvement in socket AM2 systems than has been expected -- it would not have been wise to imply much improvement earlier.
