Tim,

You are wasting your time "discussing" Vietnam with American Spirit. All of this information has been posted to him numerous times in the past. Their is absolutely no hard evidence that Kennedy had any intention of withdrawing American troops from Vietnam. He could not afford to be perceived as being soft on communism. Remember the infamous missile gap? That was one of the reasons he went forward with the Bay of Pigs. The invasion had been planned during the Eisenhower administration. Kennedy felt compelled to go ahead with the invasion, if you could call it that, even though he had some concerns about the planning.

During Kennedy's tenure, the number of U.S. troops in Vietnam grew from 900 to 16,000. Nixon started drawing down the troop levels as soon as he came into office.

Kennedy also acquiesced to the assassination of the Diem brothers, the last democratically elected government in Vietnam. A major blunder.

Kennedy was a transitional president. He may have had the potential for greatness, but we will never know.

Regards,

Glenn
