Another interesting aspect to waves is anti-waves, i.e. troughs. A 100-foot deep trough is just as likely to develop amidst 30-foot waves as is a 100-foot wave.

Research has showed that as many ships are lost from freak troughs, which may break the ship in half or fill it with water, as there are from freak waves.
