IMO the term conspiracy theory has been intentionally tainted to attack the credibility of doubters of the official line.

This is where the danger is and why I responded to LLCF the way I did. He laughed about one "ridiculous" statement and I laughed about the other.

Both statements were likely equally wrong but one thing is clear, the official wrong statement got a lot of credibility and by no means deserved! As to oil there might have been quite a few speculations and not necessarily on oil by some insiders:
