Think about what this means for the whole bin distribution. Suddenly, AMDs top bins, relatively difficult and expensive to yield, become mainstream parts at best. And their mainstream bins? The sweet spot? Welcome to the discount value-bin.

Yes and no. It all depends on the flatness or steepness of the pricing curve.

The problem that Intel has is that their NGA stuff will be (probably) less than 25-30% of their total shipments by the end of the year (correct me with links if you know otherwise).

If that welcomes AMD to the "value bin" what does it do to the utterly uncompetitive 70% of Intel's line? Super value bin (others have made this argument so it's not uniquely mine)?

Once we are in ~Q1 next year, K8L will be close enough for the Intel advantage not to matter too much (in keeping socket wins with AMD).

Then it's very impressive that it seems that AMD's quad core looks to be about the size of Intel's NGA dual core.

If the K8L does anything to close the performance gap (or equal it), what does a quad core the same size as Intel's dual core do to the value of Intel line up?

This game has changed forver Doug. Intel let AMD gain too much of a hold and make too much of a mind share as a tech leader and Intel as a tech laggard that the boost that you're expecting from this ~20% on average may not materialize.
