The only people McCarthy ever persecuted were perfectly patriotic, honest, hardworking, ethical and anti-totalitarian Americans who just happened to care about freedom of speech, human rights, civil rights, the right to organize, peace on earth, talking to foreigners and fighting poverty. Way back then there was the remnant of a communist party, but it had nothing to do with the Soviet Union. It was a totally different thing, an innocent form that just happaned to have the same name.
By McCarthy's definition, tens of millions of Americans are now "communists". Maybe even a hundred million. McCarthy perped one of the biggest lies in US history and hopefully he has ended up in a very hot place in eternal hell.
One of many big lies of the rightwing these days is claiming people like Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie and Aaron Copland were "communist" in the sense that they supported the Soviet dictatorship. Nothing could be further from the truth. They were better more patriotic Americans than McCarthy ever was, much better. Instead, it was McCarthy who was trying to turn the US into a dictatorship. And he almost succeeded by concocting his big lie to try and strangle democracy and free speech in this country.
Let this be a lesson to current rightwingers who feel romantic about rightwing dictatorships. McCarthy ended up abandoned by all and totally disgraced. He deserved life in prison. So when Anne Coulter tells you to admire McMarthy, throw a pie in her ugly face. She's almost as wicked anmd dishonest as McCarthy was. |
