I believe we have actually improved in our attitudes toward and efforts in stopping this kind of misery. But we also hear a lot more about it now too. I don't believe any of us alive today would be very comfortable living as recently as 100 years ago. Much of what we take for granted is the result of a century of effort. Living in 1906 would quickly convince us of that. We have to believe that we have improved ourselves. Not out of smugness, but because one of civilization's main goals is the betterment of its populations.
