Iomega Corp. (NYSE: IOM) Monday announced the expansion of the Jaz(R) family of high-performance removable storage products which have earned endorsements from top PC manufacturers and awards from multiple publications.
The new addition, the Jaz 2GB drive and 2GB disks -- a two-gigabyte (GB) high performance personal storage solution -- will provide users with more room for their personal computer stuff.
The Jaz 2GB removable drive, with an included and complete software suite, provides twice the capacity and up to 40 percent higher performance than the original Jaz drive for desktop and mobile computing. Jaz 2GB drives are also compatible with Jaz 1GB disks, protecting the investment of over 1 million existing Jaz drive users.
The Jaz 2GB drive exceeds the performance of other removable storage products in its class available today by operating at an impressive maximum sustained transfer rate of 8.7 megabytes (MB) per second -- fast enough to deliver full-screen, full-motion video.
Jaz 2GB drives and 2GB disks are expected to be available worldwide through mail order, computer superstores, distributors and resellers in the fourth quarter of 1997 for a minimum advertised price in the U.S. of $649 for the external model and $549 for the internal model, with Jaz disks priced at $149 each when purchased in a 3-pak.

Jaz 2GB disks provide a premium storage solution for professionals in the graphic design, desktop publishing, multimedia, CAD/CAM, software development, A/V and IT/MIS markets that need hard drive expansion combined with high-performance, portability and compatibility with a wide range of service bureaus.
Jaz 2GB drives and 2GB disks enable users to create, store, catalog and share large files, such as space-consuming scans; entire web sites; digital movies, sounds and photos; large graphic files; and databases on a single Jaz 2GB disk.

-- High Performance and Speed: Jaz 2GB drives operate at a maximum sustained transfer rate of up to 8.7 MB per second and have a 20MB per second synchronous SCSI transfer rate. With an average transfer rate of 7.4MB per second, Jaz 2GB drives back up 2GB in as little as 20 minutes. The drive has a minimum transfer rate of 4.9MB per second, delivering a 10 millisecond read/12 millisecond write average seek time, and 15.5-17.5 millisecond access time with a 512 kilobyte read/write cache.
-- High-Capacity: A single Jaz 2GB disk can store:
- more than 3 hours of CD quality (44.1 kHz, 16 bit) audio;
- 111 minutes of MPEG2 compressed DSS satellite quality video;
and
- 2,000 pictures (640x480, 24 bit/pixel, full color).
