I believe that Australia & New Zealand's immigration policies are similiar to the very pragmatic ones currently in place for Canada.

Canada I'm a bit more familiar with though. There, preference is given to immigrants with high education, valuable commercial skills, or lot's o' MONEY (on the theory that those who invest capital drive the creation of jobs).

They last modified their immigration laws just prior to the handover of Hong Kong to the mainlanders --- as there were, at that time, a *large* number of wealthy HK citizens who had some doubts about their possible futures, and wanted some back-stop assurances (such as dual passports :).

In Canada the rule became: invest $1 Million locally and (if not disqualified for some other obvious factor) he can have a Canadian citizenship. Many very wealthy HKers flew in with suitcases full of currency, invested locally, bought property, etc. As a result of that pragmatic government policy, B.C. has one of the most vibrant Chinatowns in the hemisphere today....

(RE: your US concerns, however... remember that Bush is lame duck now.)
