Pointing out that the Soviets had horrible atrocities from near the beginning of their regime is covering up for McCarthy??? McCarthy's America would have been every bit as oppressive as Soviet Russia. Nonsense. Not a single one of the artists or workers who went to communist meetings or read Trotsky books were in support of totalitarianism, dictatorships, military-police rule, gulags... "Not a single one" is a strong statement, and one that you don't provide support for. But I'll grant that the majority of them did not openly advocate gulags and "military-police rule". OTOH many of them support the Soviet Union, and the Soviet Union had gulags and the KGB. They may have been deluded as to the nature of the USSR, or they may have had other motives, but they did provide at least weak and indirect support for totalitarianism, and in a few cases where Soviet agents.
