Dear Doug:

NGA will not retake the crown until it is vetted by server customers and that takes 9-15 months depending on complexity. If it didn't, Intel would not be selling one server this quarter with its current power hungry expensive CPUs that perform poorly to boot.

You act like server people can turn around instantly. Sorry, the real world takes time, lots of it. And those delays will mean that NGAs will not be crossing P4 Xeon deliveries for at least a year after widespread public availability, assuming Intel can produce them.

And what will server people do when they find out that 1S servers can be made from high quality workstations and high end desktops? The 1S server market goes bye bye. The 2S market may still give NGA fits as no server class benchmarks have been publically released. I suspect Woodcrest will not show a 20% performance advantage over Opteron at the same clock. It is more likely to be a wash at the same clock.

Woodcrest's problem is that Opteron will pull away from it in clock speed. The FSB and memory bottleneck will make 2S/DC even more behind 2S/DC Opteron in server loads. In QC versions, NGA will be behind Opteron in all numbers of sockets, 1S, 2S, 4S, 8S and up. And all that is before any Coprocessor advantage is figured in completely on Opteron's side.

Pete
