Running Bull, the WSJ story refers to some kind of patented barrier between the U and the Si. I wonder about this barrier. It says it is patented, which presumably means that it was invented several years ago. I wonder who invented it, and who will be able to get rights to it? If it is IBM, I understand that IBM has patent cross-licensing agreements with lots of companies.

Here is the excerpt from the story ...

All the major chip manufacturers have been racing to develop a
viable process that uses copper, ..... Until now, no one had figured out how to use copper ... without corrupting a chip's silicon wafer.

Now, IBM researchers have figured out a way to affix copper on the chips using a patented "fusion barrier" that keeps the metal from poisoning the silicon
