As you know, metals are contaminants in silicon, unless you can protect the silicon surfaces and backside. The trick is to have all surfaces sealled prior to copper deposition. In general, Cu reduces the "on" resistance of a transistor making it dissipating less heat and result in less power consumption... to do the same work.

Products using Copper are generally ASICs. They've been shipping them to many customers! I remember the sight of a "golden" copper layer on a silicon wafer. Very pretty! Copper was so mallable (sp?) that when the wafer broke, all pieces were held together by the copper layer like a hinge!
