I guess it could be that AMD *was* holding out for a larger deal, but when it became clear that NGA was going to be extremely good, they accepted a smaller deal in the segment they will still outperform in.

No. I think Dell may have been hoping for desktop parts earlier, like 6 months ago, at quantities AMD could not deliver, so that deal did not go through. Instead of jumping on the tail end of Socket 940 server parts, Dell will just start with Socket 1207 parts.
