The reason Paul Allen sold that "chunk" of stock was to pay for his purchase of the Seattle Seahawks, player salaries, his piece of the new stadium, etc.

And yes, MSFT options do expire. Depending on when they were granted, they are good for either 7 or 10 years.

People tend to make a lot of the sales of stock by MSFT insiders. What's often forgotten is that most of them have very expensive hobbies :-).
