The AMB chip seems to take relativly big power, the region
is between 8 and 11W per module. So, when you have 4 DRAM
modules, the system will end up with around 40W more. So,
when we look at the typical 2P system, which some users stress
all the time and we take a normal 4 DRAM setting (should be
more), the added power for 1 socket or 1DC CPU is 2x8/11W
or around 16-20W.
So when we assume a VERY VERY healthy 65W from Intel, you
could add 16-20W for AMD and this will end up powerwise in
parity. So AMD could do 80-85W Server units and in the end it
would consume nearly the same. Now you could look at the
northbridge - thx, to the elegant AMD design, the power in
AMD systems isn't that big, you could add AGAIN for Intel
near 10W and more, so for again 1 socket it will cost Intel another 5-10W.
So, AMD would now end at 90-95W for one unit to be on par. When
you add more memory, the equation gets way worse for Intel
and when you start with 80W at Intel ...
