McMab- "I agree with others here who think this is a setup"

I certainly have thought about possible Machiavellian explanations for all this. Who knows with M. Dell, but I tremendously doubt that Otellini and Intel are in on it. This is *really* embarrassing for Intel, and Otellini's job is not secure at this point. A possible embarrassment for AMD in 9 months is not a likely strategy for someone worried about losing his job. Otellini wants some positive results and publicity *now*.

My explanations for the "Why now?" question:

1. It takes attention away from Dell's poor results.
2. Intel's 4P solution sucks, and will suck for some time.
3. The 4P segment, thanks to AMD, is growing rapidly and starting to make inroads into areas of Dell strength (2P). This wasn't the case before.
4. Customers are saying we won't stick with Dell if we can't get best in class solutions for each class of server.

I assume that Mikey talked it over with Otellini, and the AMD 4P-only solution was finalized. I assume Dell will continue to get better discounts than everyone else.
