I assumed the holdup was the photo server, not SI. Perhaps the pictures were in limbo for a period right after I uploaded them. Could be wrong

You probably didn't have a good "hot link." You need the URL to be a permanent one. For instance, NYT pictures will stop showing when they archive the article they are with. I find that pictures from Google images stay around.
