Hawkmoon..it's not a we or they situation any more its an US situation..how do we get out of this mess in a way that is a win win situation for everyone.....

No such thing when it comes to geo-political power struggles. A US "victory" (democratization of the mid-east) creates losers on the side of Jihadist aiming restore the Caliphate, or usher in the return of the Mahdi.

They are playing a Zero-Sum game.. All or nothing.. And we can't seem to muster the apparent intelligence to understand their mentality. If you don't know the intent of your enemy, then you're likely to fail to understand what is necessary to defeat, or at least thwart, his agenda.

Islamo-Fascism is the equivalent of an Islamic Crusade against the rest of the world (in their minds).

Were we Muslims during the first crusades, could we really have expected that the oncoming Christian Crusaders would have negotiated "peace" prior to their arrival??

Hardly.. they wanted to through out the conquering Muslims (300 years late) and they had the affirmation of the church and "god's will" to usher them on.

Only after having arrived and fought a series of bloody campaigns did the crusading Kings and Knights seek some measure of peaceful accommodation with their Muslim neighbors. But that was because they lacked the military strength to do any more than that.

And of course, opening up trade routes from the East to Europe certainly "lubricated" the temporary truce.
