A friend of mine told me of kind of a double lottery that got him into the USA. He was born in mainland China. A lot of his relatives chipped in money, a large sum, and held a contest for the best student among their children. There was some kind of standardized test, he came out on top and all that money went to pay bribes and such to get him to Hong Kong.

In Hong Kong he was confronted with a similar situation, only the pool of candidates and money extended beyond his relatives. Once again he came out on top and the prize was assistance for a green card to the U.S.A. He told me this once as a deadline for work approached and I felt weary of the pressure of 12 hour days. He kind of chuckled and implied I didn't know what real pressure was.
