I didn't see the argument for amnesty; I saw a muddle of "no illegal immigration" next to don't mistreat the children of those illegal immigrants that he wouldn't allow in the first place. Maybe I missed something in his zigging and zagging.

Seems to me there are four basic issues:

Immigration status and benefits for illegals now in the country

Work status for illegals now in the country

Border control

Work status for those who want to enter the country in the future

You can toggle each one on or off - amnesty and benefits or deportation for number one. Work permits or crack down on employers of illegals for number two. Fence or no fence for number three. Guest worker program or not for number four.

Deportation is a pipe dream, we know. Cracking down on thousands of employers, well, who's gonna do it, all those immigration officials with so much spare time on their hands now? Fence, shmence, the border is too long to stop everyone. Maybe you cut the number of new illegals to 300,000 from 500,00 each year. So for #4, you can assign a regular status and have some control in the future or we can go on doing it the way we do now, off the books.

There is no single voice of the whole people on those issues. His writing is powerful and eloquent but I don't see where it gets us when it comes time to push the toggle switch up or down.
