<Can anyone here look me straight in the face and tell me that Americans deserve to live the way they do, many in shameless luxury in comparison to workers in other countries that make it all possible because they are exploited by well heeled US corporations that no longer hire their own citizens?>

There are many issues, but in comparison to Asia, one comes to mind:

Space: Asians simply don't have the space to have a large number of consumer goods, because of the shortage of land.

I do agree with you on consumption just for the sake of it. I remember reading how Noma, a Christmas tree light maker, was curious to find out why they were selling so many more light sets in the US than Canada.

The discovered that in Canada a the end of the season most consumers took the lights off the trees and placed them in a box, storing them for the next year.

They found many Americans would take an extra large garbage bad and put the tree, lights, decorations and all into it and put it out for collection, planning to buy all new next year.

This is why I don't think it will take that much for Americans to start saving again. (Maybe I'm being hopeful)
