What's boneheaded about that? It's true. If waitresses were paid better, girls might aspire to be waitresses. Saying so in not only not boneheaded, it isn't anti-immigration reform. It's just economics.

I picked up on the icky nativism/racism right away.

Heavy influx of immigrants from one place is destabilizing. That is at least as obvious as your perceptions of racism. It's indisputable.

And it also attracts those who attribute nativism and xenophobia in everything and everyone to whom the nativists and zenophobics have attached. Basic interest group politics--forget the nuance, just call them all racists. Or moonbats. Or whatever.
