It is certainly a staple of the rightwing's rhetoric, but I am not sure if delusion is a fair term It strikes me more as a cynical tactic to take away the patriotism and toughness issue from the other party.

Since everyone won't subscribe to the exact policies the Republicans assert are necessary in today's security situation, no one else can be willing to do anything. Republicans must be right.

Which is reductionist nonsense, of course. It's just the flip side of the old leftist saw about being part of the problem or part of the solution. And totally undermined by the large majority of Americans who don't trust the current administration to make the best decisions about security policy.

I keep wondering when the right is going to escape this insular circular thinking and try to come up with some new ideas they can sell to the voters. For now they are peddling what is rapidly becoming a failed set of policies.
