It's piggybacking on Holy Blood, Holy Grail, whose authors claim is real history. That whole Priory of Sion thing has since proven to be a hoax, though. My theory is it was an elaborate prank.

A lot of novels have been written as thinly disguised history. The characters are fictitious, but Brown has stated the book is based on something that is real. Recall the CNN interview that DMA posted.
