C2, no, I didn't know I'd made a pun, let alone a good one, though I did think that AWOL and Escondido went well together. Thanks for pointing that out.

I have had my usual look around and have spotted 3 houses in the neighbourhood which would make good northern summer bolt holes.

I would have to wait for a property crash to dabble in the Californian housing market and would prefer to find rental places rather than buy. Though owning is more satisfying somehow than renting. On the other hand, owning is much more of a restrictive hassle. It was quite a project to stack up my sacred 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 21st century valuables which are going to be repaired one day, or are sure to be useful as soon as I get rid of them. I even have some sacred heirlooms from the 19th century = Pitcairn Island via Norfolk Island and foreign devil activities in China.

I did manage to finally send my university notes and books to the tip [recyclers these days] after contemplating that for a few decades. I finally accepted that I am NOT going to ever start a career in elastohydrodynamics, Airy wave theory or even garden variety hydraulics. I am not really going to be concerned with Reynold's number or Bernouilli, Fourier transforms [they already earned me my retirement via QCOM investment] or triaxial compression tests on soil samples. Out they went, lock, stock and barrel, never to be used in anger.
