The democratic party is still run like a party, that is to say it is a large commitee of people with common and different interests.

The republican party, on the other hand, has been taken over by a small group of neocons from the Project for a New American Century who force their extreme and unsuccefful policies on the rest of the party. Even "Good" republicans end up voting for Tom DeLay and other crooks or face complete isolation in their own party. That alone is reason to vote democratic even if you think your own congressman might be a good guy.
