Chip inventories rose 7% in first quarter, says brokerage

SAN FRANCISCO -- Aggregate semiconductor inventories in rose 7.1% sequentially in the first quarter, Citigroup Smith Barney Investment Research reported today. The brokerage firm that the average quarter-on-quarter growth in inventory over the last six years has been 3.4%.

"Given the disproportionate weight of Intel Corp.'s much-publicized inventory problems, the 1Q06 inventories increased 5.5% excluding Intel," the investment firm's analysts said.

The report said days of chip inventories rose 8.8% in the first quarter, compared to a 5.5% average increase.

Broken down by category, the largest quarterly increase in the first quarter was for photography and imaging chips, which rose 12 days to 68 days of inventory (DOI). Computer storage remained constant at 36 DOI, and PC chips rose 2 days to 16 DOI. Server and enterprise chips gained 1 day to 33 DOI. Telecom rose 1 day to 62 DOI, and wireless climbed 3 days to 40 DOI, according to Citigroup Smith Barney figures.
