I'm not discussing nihilism but rather somewhat of a reverse, that our awareness itself is not very meaningful.

Fine if you don’t want to discuss nihilism but don’t you think that to assert that your awareness is not meaningful is ludicrous on the face of it. –without it we wouldn’t be having this conversation. If you cannot find meaning in your own awareness where do you expect to find it. ?

I wonder if self-awareness is not one of those cases of evolutionary over-specialization that ends u p hurting a species in the long run.

Again, I would say that the assertion of a false view of the self ends up hurting the species. I do not call this self awareness, it sounds much more like ignorance to me. The people that I have met who I would consider to have "over specialized in self awareness" have struck me as extraordinarily healthy and full of life and as having a beneficial effect on the species.
