Why do we have to find meaning at all?

Well we don’t, but as you pointed out when we don’t when we find life meaningless, we become miserable and that’s no fun. We just seem to be hardwired to look for meaning as a means to the end of happiness. When we find it it generates feelings of well being that are beneficial on both a personal and communal level.

If we were aware, but not self aware we would be living differently, but not necessarily worse.

The state of our awareness will affect our experience - outside of that I'm afraid I dont really understand what you're getting at. Do you have a working definition of what you mean by self awareness because for me it seems impossible to be in this world without having some level of self awareness, be it a leaning towards, for sake of conceptual categorization and conversation, a true view or a false view.
